How to Create and Manage Presets?
You can create and manage presets to save common combinations of UTM parameters, which makes building tracking URLs faster and more consistent.
A preset stores a set of values, like:
utm_campaign=blog
utm_medium=social
utm_source=twitter
under a single name (e.g., Twitter Blog Sharing). When building a new URL, you can select the preset instead of entering each value manually.
There are two ways to create a preset.
1. Create a Preset in Advance
This method is for setting up your presets before you build URLs.
- Navigate to Presets: While in your project, go to Tools > Presets and click the Create a New Preset button.
- Define the Preset:
- Enter a descriptive Preset Name that's easy to recognize, i.e., Twitter Blog Sharing.
- Fill in the values for any UTM parameters you want to save (Campaign, Medium, Source, etc.).
- Save: Click Save.
Your new preset is now ready to be used in the URL builder.
2. Create a Preset While Building a URL
You can also save a new preset directly from the URL builder.
- Enter UTM Parameters: As you create a new tracking URL, fill in the UTM parameters as you normally would.
- Save as Preset: Before saving the URL, check the box labeled Save in a preset.
- Name the Preset: Enter a name for your new preset.
- Save URL: Click Save. The tracking link will be created, and the combination of UTM values will be saved as a new preset for future use.
3. Manage Existing Presets
On the Presets page (Tools > Presets), you'll find a list of all your saved presets. For each one, you have several options:
- Edit: Click the pencil icon ✏️ to change the preset's name or any of its UTM values. Click Save to apply your changes.
- Clone: Click the copy icon ❐ to create an exact duplicate of a preset. This is useful for quickly creating a new, similar preset without starting from scratch.
- Delete: Click the trash can icon 🗑️ to permanently remove a preset. A confirmation will be required to prevent accidental deletion.
Best Practices for Presets
- Use a Clear Naming Convention: Name your presets descriptively so your team knows exactly what they are for. For example, a name like Social - Twitter Blog Post is much more useful than Preset 1.
- Leave Dynamic Fields Blank: A preset doesn't need to fill every parameter. For the newsletter examples, leaving the utm_campaign blank is a good practice. This reminds the user to enter a unique campaign name for each send while keeping the other parameters consistent.
- Keep Your List Clean: Periodically review your saved presets under Tools > Presets. Delete old or unused presets to keep the selection list manageable and relevant for your team.
By using presets, you can significantly speed up your URL creation process while ensuring your tracking data remains clean and consistent across all your campaigns.
