How to Duplicate a Project?

This article explains how to create a copy of an existing project. Duplication is a powerful feature for creating a new project with the same settings as an existing one.

It's perfect for using a "template" project to quickly set up new work for your teams or creating a "sandbox" environment to test changes safely before applying them to your main project.

Important: This feature is designed to copy project settings, not project data. Items like URLs, campaign information, and user access levels will not be carried over to the new project.

What Is Copied?

Understanding what is and isn't included in a duplication is key to using this feature effectively.

The following items WILL BE copied:

  • Custom Parameters Definitions
  • Info Fields Definitions
  • Redirect Codes
  • Labels
  • URL Rules
  • Conventions, Parameter Formats, and Fields

The following items WILL NOT be copied:

  • URLs
  • Campaigns, Mediums, Sources, Contents, and Terms
  • Custom Parameter values, Info Field values
  • Presets
  • Shortener settings (e.g., external Bitly accounts)
  • Project memberships or user access permissions
  • Any other data not explicitly mentioned in the list above

Duplicating Your Project

Follow these steps to create a copy of any project.

1. Navigate to Project Settings

You can access a project's settings from two different locations.

  • From the Dashboard:

Locate the project you wish to copy. Click the three-lines menu next to the project name and select Settings.

  • From an Open Project:

Open the project you wish to copy, click Settings in the main navigation menu.

2. Select the Duplicate Option

In the Settings menu, click Duplicate in the left-hand sidebar.

On this page click on the Duplicate button.

The duplication process will begin automatically.

3. Locate Your New Project

A new project will appear in your Dashboard, named "Copy of [Original Project Name]".

Best Practices

  • Rename Immediately: Open your new project and go to its Settings to give it a unique Name. This helps prevent confusion between the original and the copy.
  • Review Contents: A duplicated project copies only project settings, not project data, giving you a clean start.
  • Use Sharing for Common Settings: While items like Conventions and Parameter Formats are copied, we recommend using the sharing feature to manage them across multiple projects. This makes long-term maintenance much easier than managing duplicated settings.

You have successfully created a copy of your project. For more information on getting started, see our article on Setting up a New Project.
