How to Use a Parameter Group for Bulk URL Creation?

Using a saved Parameter Group with the Multi-Tag Builder is the most efficient way to generate large quantities of consistent tracking URLs for your major campaigns. This guide walks you through the exact process, from selecting your pre-built group to generating hundreds of unique, error-free links in just a few clicks.

1. Why Use a Parameter Group?

Manually creating dozens of tracking links for a large campaign is time-consuming and prone to errors. A Parameter Group is your solution for scaling this process, acting as a reusable template that saves multiple values for your UTM parameters.

For example, imagine you are launching a summer sale for your online store. You'll need links for multiple products and campaigns, running across different platforms and ad types. Your variables might look like this:

  • Destinations: www.mystore.com/shirts, www.mystore.com/jeans
  • Campaigns: summer_sale_10p, summer_sale_20p
  • Sources: facebook, instagram
  • Media: image_ad, carousel_ad

Without a Parameter Group, you would have to manually build every single combination (a Facebook image ad for shirts with the 10% sale campaign, an Instagram carousel ad for jeans with the 20% sale campaign, and so on for all 16 variations).

Important: This 16 variations total comes from the system multiplying the number of options provided for each variable: 2 Destination URLs x 2 Sources x 2 Media x 2 Campaigns = 16 unique URLs.

A Parameter Group simplifies this. You would save the recurring parts, your sources (facebook, instagram) and ad formats (image_ad, carousel_ad) into a group. Then, in the Multi-Tag Builder, you just select that one group, add your specific landing pages and campaign names for this sale, and the tool generates all 16 unique links for you instantly.

The primary benefits of this approach are:

  • Data Standardization: Ensures every URL in your campaign uses the exact same pre-approved values for sources, content, etc., eliminating typos and inconsistencies.
  • Improved Accuracy: Reduces the risk of forgotten tags by providing a clear template, ensuring every required combination is generated correctly.
  • Increased Efficiency: Drastically speeds up the URL creation process for complex campaigns, turning what could be hours of manual work into just a few clicks.

2. Generating URLs with a Parameter Group

This step-by-step guide will show you how to turn a saved Parameter Group into a complete set of ready-to-use tracking URLs.

2.1. Navigate to the Multi-Tag Builder

Go to URLs > Build Tracking URLs > Build URLs with Multiple Tags.

2.2. Add Destination URLs

In the Destination URLs text box, enter or paste the base URLs you want to create tracking links for. Place each URL on a new line. For example:

www.mystore.com/shirts
www.mystore.com/jeans

2.3. Apply a Parameter Group

From the Apply a parameter group dropdown, select the group you want to use.

  1. Add Any Additional Parameters: You can also add more parameter values on the fly for this specific batch. For example, even if your group doesn't contain campaign names, you can add them now in the UTM Campaign field, i.e.,
summer_sale_10p
summer_sale_20p

  1. Generate All Combinations: Click the Generate button. In a few moments, the system will generate a preview list of every possible unique URL based on all the destination URLs and parameter values you've provided.
  2. Save Your URLs Review the generated combinations to ensure they are correct. When you are ready, click Save.

You have now successfully created a large batch of tracking URLs using your Parameter Group.

Note: The Multi-Tag Builder is excellent for quickly creating URL combinations, but it does not support Conventions. If your workflow requires you to enforce a specific Convention, you should use the Grid Mode Builder, which provides a spreadsheet-like interface for advanced bulk creation.

Best Practices for Using the Builder

  • Start with a Group: For the most efficient workflow, always select your Parameter Group first. This loads the bulk of your data, leaving you to only add the few unique values for the current batch.
  • Double-Check Your Inputs: Before clicking "Generate," quickly scan your destination URLs and parameter values. A small typo can create dozens of incorrect links, so a quick check saves a lot of time later.
  • Use the Preview: The preview list generated is your final chance to catch any errors. Always review it carefully before saving the URLs to your project.
