How to Create and Use a Preset Groups?
Preset Groups is a powerful feature that allows you to chain multiple presets together, enabling you to build complex, multi-layered tracking URLs with a single click.
1. Why Use a Preset Group?
While a single preset saves one set of UTM values, a Preset Group acts as a "preset of presets."
This is incredibly useful when your tracking URLs require multiple layers of information that you've already saved in separate presets. For example, you can combine a "Channel" preset, a "Content Type" preset, and a "Campaign" preset into one group. Selecting that single group in the URL builder populates all the values from those three presets instantly.
The primary benefits are:
- Maximum Speed: Build complex URLs in a fraction of the time.
- Enforced Consistency: Eliminate errors by ensuring that layered tracking tags are always applied correctly.
- Scalable Tracking: Easily manage sophisticated tracking strategies across multiple campaigns and channels.
2. How to Create a Preset Group
First, ensure you have already created the individual presets you wish to group together.
- Navigate to Preset Groups: While in your project, go to Tools > Preset Groups and click the Create a New Preset group button.
- Name Your Group: Enter a descriptive name that clearly explains what the group is for (e.g., "Blog Promo - Sep 2025").
- Select Presets: In the list of available presets, select each preset you want to include in this group.
- Save: Click Save.
2.1. Example: "September Blog Promo" Preset Group
Imagine you need to create links for a blog post you are promoting on Twitter as part of your September campaign. You have already created three separate, modular presets:
- Preset 1: Social - Twitter
- utm_source = twitter
- utm_medium = social
- Preset 2: Content - Blog Post
- utm_content = blog_post
- Preset 3: Campaign - September 2025 Promo
- utm_campaign = september_promo_2025
Instead of selecting these three presets one by one, you can create a single Preset Group that combines them.
Following the steps above, you would create a group named Blog Promo - Sep 2025 and select those three presets. Now, when you use this one group in the URL builder, it will populate the source, medium, content, and campaign fields all at once.
3. How to Use a Preset Group
Preset Groups are used within the Multi-Tag URL Builder to quickly populate the tracking parameters for multiple URLs at once.
- Navigate to the Multi-Tag Builder: From the URL Builder page, click the Build URLs with Multiple Tags button.
- Apply the Preset Group: At the top of the builder's grid, locate the Apply a Preset Group dropdown menu.
- Select Your Group: Choose the Preset Group you want to use (e.g., Blog Promo - Sep 2025). The grid will instantly populate with all the UTM values from the individual presets contained within that group.
- Fill in Remaining Details: Your Preset Group may not cover every required field. You may still need to add your Destination URLs and fill in any other empty columns (like a unique utm_campaign for each row) manually.
- Save: Once your grid is complete, click Save to create all your URLs.
4. Managing Your Preset Groups
On the Preset Groups page, you will see a list of all your groups. For each one, you have following management options:
- Edit: Click the pencil icon ✏️ to change the group's name or add/remove presets from it.
- Delete: Click the trash can icon 🗑️ to permanently remove a group. This does not delete the individual presets within the group.
⚠️ This action is permanent. Once a preset group is deleted, it cannot be recovered.
Best Practices for Preset Groups
- Build Modular Presets: Preset Groups work best when your individual presets are small and focused on a single element (like a channel, a content type, or a specific campaign).
- Avoid Conflicting Values: Be careful not to include multiple presets in a group that define the same parameter (e.g., two presets that both set utm_source). This can lead to unexpected results.
- Use Descriptive Group Names: Your group's name should clearly describe the combination it creates, like Channel + Campaign or Paid Ad + Content Type.
By using Preset Groups, you can bring incredible efficiency and control to the creation of your most complex tracking URLs.
