How to Create and Manage Parameter Groups?
Parameter Groups feature is designed to help you save and organize large sets of UTM parameter values, which are then used to generate tracking URLs in bulk.
1. What is a Parameter Group?
Parameter Groups are like presets with one major difference. A preset saves one value for each UTM parameter, while a Parameter Group can save multiple values for each UTM parameter.
This is essential for large-scale campaigns where you need to pre-define all your tracking values before building the URLs. For example, you might run a display ad campaign with these settings repeated often:
utm_medium = display
utm_source = Google, Bing
utm_content = 120x600, 160x600, 200x200, 250x250, etc.
You can create a new parameter group “Display Ads”, and save all these UTM values in it. When using the Multi-Tag UTM Builder, you can select this group to instantly load all your values and generate every URL combination you need. This makes building URLs for large social, ad, or email campaigns much quicker and less error-prone.
2. How to Create a Parameter Group
Properly creating and managing these groups is the first step to streamlining your bulk URL creation workflow.
- Navigate to Parameter Groups: While in your project, go to Tools > Parameter Groups and click the Create a New Parameter Group button.
- Name Your Group: Enter a descriptive name that clearly explains its purpose (e.g., "Display Ads - Q4 2025").
- Add Parameter Values: For each UTM parameter, enter all the values you want to include. You can typically add them one by one or select from a list of previously used values.
- Save: Click Save to create the group.
3. Managing Your Parameter Groups
The Parameter Groups page lists all of your saved groups, allowing you to easily manage them. For each group, you have the option to edit, or delete.
- Edit: Click the pencil icon ✏️ to change the group's name or add and remove values from any parameter.
- Delete: Click the trash can icon 🗑️ to permanently remove a group.
⚠️ Note: This action is permanent and the group cannot be recovered.
Best Practices for Parameter Groups
- Organize by Campaign: Create a new group for each major campaign or marketing activity (e.g., "Fall Social Media Push," "PPC Keyword Expansion") to keep your assets organized.
- Understand the Combinations: Be aware that the number of URLs generated will be a product of the number of values in each field. A group with 2 sources, 5 keywords, and 3 ad types will generate 30 URLs (2 x 5 x 3).
- Keep Your List Clean: Periodically review and delete old groups for campaigns that are no longer active to avoid clutter.
Parameter Groups are the most efficient way to manage and execute large-scale, bulk URL creation for your most demanding campaigns.
